The UNIC UC50 (RM 200–350 on AliExpress, was RM 485 at launch) is the right pico projector if your use case is a dark room movie session — bed-to-wall projection, camping trips, or guest room use without a permanent TV installation. It’s the wrong projector if you want to replace a TV or use it in a lit room.
I bought one in early 2016 when the budget pico projector market was full of low-quality 4:3 ratio LED toys. The UC50 stood out then for its DLP chip and 16:9 native resolution. In 2025, the market has more options, but the UC50’s fundamentals hold up for the price.
Is the UNIC UC50 Worth Buying vs a RM 3,000 Branded Projector?
For most casual home users in Malaysia — yes, the UC50 is sufficient. Here’s the honest comparison:
| Feature | UNIC UC50 | RM 3,000 branded projector |
|---|---|---|
| Native resolution | 854×480 (plays 1080p files fine) | 1920×1080 native |
| Lumens | 800 | 3,000–4,000+ |
| Light requirement | Dark room only | Bright/ambient room OK |
| Portability | Pocket-sized, battery-powered | Mains power, bulky |
| Use case | Bedroom, camping, travel | Living room, home cinema |
| Price | RM 200–350 | RM 3,000+ |
If you’re setting up a dedicated home cinema room, spend the money on a proper projector. If you want something you can pull out for bedtime movies and pack away during the day, the UC50 is a strong value pick.
What the UNIC UC50 Does Well
Image quality in dark rooms: Sharp and clear. The DLP chip produces accurate colours — it’s noticeably better than the LED pico projectors that flood the market. Projection from the bed (1.5m to wall) gives a 70–80 inch image that genuinely looks good with just one dim light on.
True portability: This is pocketable. It takes a standard 5V phone charger (Samsung charger included in box), runs on its built-in battery, and can be powered indefinitely from a power bank. I’ve used it off a 5,000mAh Xiaomi bank for 2–3 hours of playback at 60% starting charge.
Connection versatility: HDMI, AV, USB, microSD, audio output. The HDMI input is what makes it genuinely useful — plug in a Chromecast or Fire Stick and you get full streaming with your phone as the remote controller, which is a much better experience than the built-in USB file browser.
What It Doesn’t Do Well
Ambient light: 800 lumens is insufficient for a lit room. Under normal Malaysian room lighting, the image washes out significantly — usable for presentations but not movie-watching quality. This is the single biggest limitation.
No keystone correction for angled projection: If you can’t point the UC50 straight at the wall (perpendicular), you get a trapezoid image. There’s no digital correction to fix this. Set it up on a flat surface aimed directly at the wall or ceiling.
Built-in speaker: Acceptable for private viewing with no background noise. Not usable in anything louder. Use headphones or a Bluetooth speaker — the audio output jack makes this easy.
Tripod in package: The included mini tripod is adequate only if you’re playing directly from microSD. Add a HDMI streaming stick and the cable weight causes it to tilt. Bring your own sturdier tripod (I use a Manfrotto mini tripod).
My Actual Setup
- UC50 projector on a Manfrotto mini tripod
- Google Chromecast connected via HDMI
- 5,000mAh Xiaomi power bank for the projector
- Bluetooth earphones
Chromecast casting from phone gives the best experience — the phone UI stays responsive while video streams to the UC50. Casting from some streaming apps with SmartDNS/VPN didn’t work reliably in 2016; test your specific app before committing to this setup.

- UC50 projector
- IR remote control
- HDMI cable
- RCA (F) to AV cable
- Samsung USB charger
- USB power cable
